Did you know?

Scientists have actually brought the eggs of brine shrimp into outer space to carry out tests on the impact of radiation on lifeforms. Brine shrimp cysts (or eggs) were flown on the U.S. Biosatellite II, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17 missions. In addition they were also carried on the Russian Cosmos 782, Cosmos 1129, Foton 10, and Foton 11 flights.

On the NASA Apollo missions, the brine shrimp cysts travelled all the way to the Moon and back. As part of the test, the cosmic rays passed through an egg would be detected on the photographic film in their container. Some eggs were kept back on Earth to be used as experimental controls thus ensuring a competent test. Also, as the launch of a space rocket involves a lot of turbulence and extreme acceleration, one of the control groups was accelerated to seven times the force of gravity. Also it was vibrated mechanically for several minutes so they could experience the same violence of a rocket take-off!

Overall there were 400 eggs in each experiment group. Back on planet earth all the eggs from the experiment were placed in salt water to hatch under perfect conditions. Sadly as a consequence of the cosmic ray blast 90% of the embryos died at different developmental stages.
