Or maybe you just do not give the thought a single moment and just simply be. Whatever your own personal outlook, life is all about duality. In Chinese philosophy, this is known as “yin and yang”.

This is the concept that forces are complementary rather than opposing. The thought that you cannot have light without dark. That neither has a higher state than the other. Therefore an increase in one state leads to an equivalent reduction in the other. As a result a correct balance between the two must be reached to achieve harmony. Male and female. Good and bad. Rich and poor. Fire and water. Expansion and contraction. Blessings from disaster. Illness a doorway to health. Yin and yang are parts of the greater “oneness.” This is duality.

If we do not know the cold of a dark winter, it is not likely we will ever value the warmness of a summer’s day. There will be few things that can arouse our appetite for life’s simple pleasures than the famishment caused by sorrow or fear. For a successful completion of our incredible journey through life, it is vital we turn every tear of anguish into a pearl of wisdom. This way we can find a blessing in every curse.

“In order to eat, you have to be hungry. In order to learn, you have to be ignorant because ignorance is a condition of learning. Pain is a condition of health. Passion is a condition of thought. Death is a condition of life.”

― Robert Anton Wilson, Leviathan

I spoke recently about the hectic pace of modern life. The myriad calls upon our time. As a result, the more we do, the more precious time becomes until when the time comes for us to leave this dimension, we are left wondering “where did all the time go?” The truth is the time did not go anywhere we did not go. However, if time is a river, then we are seated facing backwards in a boat, and the future reveals itself behind us.

Take some time now to contemplate the simpler things in life.
